Rather than focusing on the military, scientific, or commercial history of the internet, it investigates locally rooted initiatives that used emerging technologies, including personal computers, modems, email, bulletin boards, and the World Wide Web, to create digital public spaces.<br>Drawing on seven cases, three in Amsterdam (DDS, Cyburg, and Buurtleven), alongside Digital Bristol, In-Town-Net, Rete Civica di Milano, and SameNet, the thesis defines digital cities as online systems connected to a geographically defined city, region, or neighbourhood that addressed local issues and enabled public interaction.
